JORHAT, March 20: Putting an end to all speculation, the BJP has finally left the important Teok constituency in Jorhat to its ally, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), in the interest of the alliance.
For a long time, discussions had been ongoing regarding which party would contest from the Teok constituency. Since Teok is considered a stronghold of the AGP, its party workers were unwilling to give it up. After the recent delimitation, the size of the constituency increased significantly and BJP workers were also demanding that a BJP candidate be fielded from there.
However, through mutual discussions, the BJP eventually ceded the seat to the AGP. Accordingly, the AGP has selected Bikash Saikia, a long-time party worker, as its candidate for the important Teok constituency.
Saikia said that he would file his nomination on the 23rd and acknowledged that the Teok constituency faces many issues. He assured that efforts would be made to resolve these problems with the cooperation of the people. He further stated that both the BJP and AGP will continue to work towards solving public issues in the coming days.
Meanwhile, the procession that began near Kakodonga bridge in Jorhat reached the district AGP office, where hundreds of supporters congratulated him before proceeding towards Teok.
