SIVASAGAR, Nov 3: Samir Gogoi, a BJP leader and son of former Assembly Speaker late Pronob Gogoi, has demanded that the old Dikhow iron bridge be renamed after singing icon Zubeen Garg, who died under mysterious circumstances in a sea of Singapore on September 19.

The Dikhow bridge was constructed by the British in 1935 to facilitate the transport of tea, timber and other products from the region to Kolkata. It was later abandoned following a PWD notification due to its deteriorated and rusty condition.

A new RCC bridge built alongside the old one was inaugurated by former Chief Minister Hiteswar Saikia in 2003 and named after academician and litterateur Dr Moidul Islam Bora.
