GUWAHATI, Aug 31: The Assam unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday staged a protest outside the Congress headquarters in Guwahati against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s alleged derogatory remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s late mother.

According to an official statement issued by Assam Pradesh BJP, the protest, held under the banner of a Rajiv Bhawan Gherao, was part of a statewide agitation announced by the party.

BJP said Gandhi’s comments, made during an election rally in Darbhanga, Bihar, were an “insult to mothers and women across the country” and demanded that the Congress leader tender an unconditional public apology.

The statement further alleged that the Congress party, being “deprived of power for a long time,” had resorted to “false allegations and slanderous remarks,” adding that Gandhi had “lost his sense of propriety” by targeting the Prime Minister’s mother.

During the Guwahati protest, BJP workers raised slogans against Rahul Gandhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi. Party workers also blackened portraits of Gandhi and Kharge.

The BJP has also announced that district-level protests will be held across Assam on August 31 and September 1 as part of the agitation.
