GUWAHATI, Nov 7: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said that there has been major boost in river tourism following the inauguration of Guwahati Terminal and Jetty along with Sati Radhika Shaanti Udyan—two projects aimed at transformation of Brahmaputra riverfront.
Sarma said, “The newly inaugurated Brahmaputra riverfront terminal is unique and no terminal in the country can match the beauty of this project. This project was aimed to provide a major boost in river tourism. Assam has huge potential for river tourism and this can be explored in the coming days.”
The chief minister asserted that this Guwahati terminal was designed to give people a taste of what tourists in Singapore or Bangkok normally enjoy by staying for hours in the river.
“In Singapore and Bangkok, people enjoy 2-3 hours of river outing and this can also be enjoyed at Guwahati terminal as we have unlocked the huge potential of river tourism here,” he said.
Sarma also mentioned that once Guwahati-North Guwahati bridge over the Brahmaputra River becomes operational, the ferry service will become dysfunctional in this route and river tourism will be given priority by the state government.
The chief minister highlighted the transformation of Guwahati’s riverfront through the newly developed Guwahati Gateway Terminal and jetty along the Brahmaputra.
Sharing images of the illuminated riverbank, he described the project as a major step forward in strengthening Assam’s connectivity and tapping into the economic potential of inland waterways.
According to Sarma, the initiative is part of the Centre’s Maritime India Vision 2030, aimed at developing sustainable port-led infrastructure and boosting regional trade routes. He said that the new terminal is expected to improve passenger movement, promote tourism, and enhance cargo transport through the National Waterway-2, positioning Guwahati as a key link in Northeast India’s river transport network.
