Guwahati, 15 Oct: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on October 15 arrested the Executive Director and Regional Officer of the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), Guwahati, after he was caught red-handed while taking a ₹10 lakh bribe from a private individual. Acting on reliable information, the agency set up a trap on 14 October and nabbed the officer and a representative of a private company during the transaction.
According to officials, the accused demanded the bribe in exchange for granting a favourable extension of time and issuing a completion certificate for the 4-laning of National Highway 37 between Demow and Moran Bypass. The project, executed by a private company, was among several infrastructure works under NHIDCL in Assam. The CBI also registered a case against two representatives of the same company for their alleged involvement in the bribery.

After the arrests, CBI teams carried out searches at seven office and residential premises linked to the accused across multiple cities. During the raids, officials seized ₹2.62 crore in cash and found documents related to nine landed properties and 20 apartments registered in the name of the officer and his family. Papers showing ownership of high-end vehicles were also recovered.
Officials confirmed that verification of the seized properties and assets is ongoing. Both the arrested individuals were produced before the Court of Special Judge, CBI Cases, Guwahati, on Wednesday. The agency said further investigation is in progress to trace the entire network of transactions and the sources of unexplained wealth.
