GUWAHATI, June 28: A general meeting was convened at the office of the Vice Chancellor, Gauhati University, to deliberate on the publication of a commemorative souvenir marking the 100th birth anniversary of Golap Borbora, the first non-Congress Chief Minister of Assam and an influential figure in the state’s socio-political landscape.
The meeting was held to formally initiate plans for the centenary publication and to bring together individuals closely associated with Borbora’s legacy.
According to an official statement, the meeting witnessed the participation of several eminent personalities, including Dr Nani Gopal Mahanta, Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University; Kuntal Moni Sarmah Bordoloi, IAS, Officer on Special Duty to the Chief Minister of Assam; Dr Arupjyoti Choudhury, Vice Chancellor of Madhabdev University; Padma Shri awardee and noted social worker Ajoy Kumar Dutta; distinguished author Dr Ranjit Sabhapandit; Pankaj Borbora, son of the late Golap Borbora; and Abhinav P Borbora, grandson of the late leader.
During the course of the meeting, Dr Nani Gopal Mahanta, Dr Arupjyoti Choudhury, and Kuntal Moni Sarmah Bordoloi were unanimously selected as Editors of the forthcoming centenary souvenir.
The editorial team is tasked with curating a comprehensive and insightful publication that will serve as a valuable repository of historical and personal material related to Golap Borbora.
The souvenir will include personal letters, interviews, diary entries, and rare photographs, offering a nuanced portrayal of Borbora’s life, political ideology, and his lasting contributions to Assam.
The proposed publication is being undertaken as a tribute to Golap Borbora’s enduring legacy and is intended to highlight the values and vision he championed throughout his political career.
The initiative is viewed as a collective endeavour to document and celebrate the journey of a leader who played a formative role in shaping modern Assam and whose influence continues to resonate in the state’s public and political discourse.
