JORHAT, June 29: A citizens group in Jorhat is set to celebrate the 79th birthday of internationally acclaimed writer and journalist Arup Kumar Dutta by organising a two-day event beginning July 2.
The event will feature a public felicitation ceremony at Jorhat Theatre hall to honour Dutta, a Padma Shri awardee and a celebrated literary figure from Assam.
The citizens group, led by its president Hemanta Kalita—former MLA and former Jorhat district BJP president—announced that the felicitation programme will begin at 3.30 pm on July 2.
Kalita described Dutta as “an illustrious son of Jorhat” whose diverse literary contributions have brought recognition to Assam and the region.
Arup Kumar Dutta, born in Jorhat on July 2, 1946, is known for his extensive body of work encompassing non-fiction books on topics such as rhinos, tea, the Brahmaputra, the Ahom dynasty, and the Gauhati High Court, along with a wide range of fiction and children’s literature.
Kalita stated that Dutta’s achievements deserve to be celebrated through a public ovation.
The event will be graced by noted writer and social thinker Mayur Bora, literary critic Hrishikesh Goswami, and Dr Samudra Gupta Kashyap, Chancellor of Nagaland University and former Information Commissioner of Assam.
As part of the celebration, an interaction programme with students will be held on July 3 at 10 am at the auditorium of the Jorhat Science Centre and Planetarium, where Dutta is expected to share his experiences and insights with the younger generation.
Dutta began his professional career as a faculty member at Jagannath Barooah College in Jorhat and went on to gain national and international acclaim for his literary work.
