Class X student found dead on riverbank in Tezpur; two detained for questioning

TEZPUR, June 15: A Class X student who had been missing since Sunday was found dead on the banks of the Dipota river in the Arimora area of Besseria on Monday morning, prompting public outrage and demands for a thorough investigation.

The deceased was identified as Jonak Jyoti Mahanta.

According to family members, the teenager had been missing since Sunday morning.

The recovery of the body, which reportedly bore visible injury marks on the face, has raised suspicions of foul play among the victim’s family and local residents.

Relatives have alleged that the boy was murdered and have urged the authorities to treat the case accordingly.

Tension prevailed in the area following the discovery of the body, with residents gathering at the Bebejia Police Outpost on Monday afternoon to demand justice.

Protesters called for the case to be investigated as a murder and urged the police to arrest those responsible without delay.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident and sent the body to Kanaklata Civil Hospital, Tezpur, for post-mortem examination.

In a significant development, police have detained two students for questioning in connection with the case.

Investigators are currently examining all possible angles to ascertain the circumstances leading to the teenager’s death.

Officials said the exact cause of death would be determined after the post-mortem report is received.
