JORHAT, Jan 6: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited Jorhat on Tuesday and inspected the under-construction Freedom Memorial Park, one of the key heritage projects being developed in the town.
During the visit, the chief minister interacted with the media and shared his views on state politics, governance issues and upcoming infrastructure projects.
Commenting on Raijor Dal leader Akhil Gogoi, the chief minister said he regularly watches Gogoi’s live videos and suggested that journalists should also follow them.
In a lighter remark, he said that when Gogoi skipped a live session one day, he became concerned about his health and asked minister Pijush Hazarika to check on him.
Referring to the 2026 Assembly elections, Sarma said the BJP was fully prepared and that discussions would be held across all 126 Assembly constituencies.
He said the BJP-led alliance was likely to contest around 103 seats, adding that candidate selection within the party is largely done through internal consultations rather than complicated processes.
Addressing the issue of eviction, Sarma said that those who had been evicted would not have their names included in the voter list, but clarified that they could continue to stay at their present locations.
Criticising the Congress party’s slogan “Save Caste, Save Land,” the chief minister questioned which caste the party was referring to and said the Congress should be explicit about its intent.
He also took a dig at Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, remarking that despite multiple visits to Assam, including visits to tea gardens, she had failed to bring tangible benefits to the state. On the development front, Sarma announced that the Freedom Memorial Park in Jorhat and the flyover from Barua Chariali to Bhogdoi Bridge are likely to be opened to the public in February, adding that both projects would significantly enhance the town’s infrastructure and public spaces.
