DIBRUGARH, July 24: In a significant push to strengthen medical education and academic infrastructure in Upper Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday laid the foundation stones for major infrastructure projects at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) and Dibrugarh University.
According to an official statement, a ₹357 crore project has been sanctioned for the construction of Teachers’ Quarters and Students’ Hostels within the 504-bigha AMCH campus.
The project is being implemented by the Public Works (Health & Education) Department.
The planned faculty accommodation includes two blocks for senior faculty members with 40 flats and three blocks for junior faculty with 60 flats.
Separate residences for the Principal, Vice-Principals, and Medical Superintendent are also part of the project.
To meet students’ residential requirements, a 500-seat girls’ hostel and a 225-seat boys’ hostel for MBBS students will be constructed. Postgraduate students will benefit from a 232-seat capacity hostel for female students and a 200-seat capacity hostel for male students.
A separate 250-capacity hostel for General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) students is also being planned.
In addition, staff accommodation will include six blocks comprising 120 flats for Grade III employees and nursing staff, and eight blocks with 192 flats for Grade IV staff.
Supporting infrastructure such as a dining block and community hall will also be developed to improve campus life.
Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister laid the foundation stones for a series of development projects at Dibrugarh University under the Chief Minister’s Special Grant and the Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (PM-USHA), with a combined outlay of ₹147 crore.
Addressing the gathering, Sarma said, “This is a historic day for the people of Dibrugarh. With these projects at Dibrugarh University and Assam Medical College and Hospital, we have taken one step forward in our mission to establish Dibrugarh as the second capital of Assam. These projects will transform both institutions into premier centres of excellence with world-class facilities.”
The Chief Minister added that the government is committed to creating a conducive environment for learning, research, and holistic development for students and faculty.
