GUWAHATI, Dec 9: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, addressing the 4th convocation of Cotton University, called upon graduates to unlock their potential and contribute to making Assam a competent and self-dependent state.
Congratulating the 2,804 degree recipients, he said their achievements reflect their dedication as well as the support of teachers and families.
Reminiscing his student days at the erstwhile Cotton College, Sarma said the institution shaped his life and continues to inspire young minds with its dynamic academic environment.
He noted that Cotton University has embraced emerging fields such as AI-driven climate research and satellite-enabled environmental studies, strengthening its role in advancing scientific knowledge in the Northeast.
The chief minister highlighted Assam’s rapid transformation in the education sector, citing the establishment of over 25 medical colleges—15 functional and others under construction—along with 25–26 universities and multiple engineering institutions including IIT Guwahati and NIT Silchar.
He said Assam is now a hub of new opportunities, from startups to industrial growth, and is steadily progressing toward becoming one of India’s five most developed states.
Referring to role models such as Simu Das, Lovlina Borgohain, Hima Das and Uma Chetry, Sarma encouraged graduates to adopt a positive mindset and drive societal change.
He expressed happiness at the rising number of women graduates, calling it a sign of the state’s inclusive growth, and cited the example of 800 Assamese girls working at Apple’s facility in Hosur as a reflection of the state’s growing talent pool.
The convocation conferred degrees on postgraduates, undergraduates and diploma holders. Among those present were Cotton University vice chancellor Prof Ramesh Ch Deka, AIIMS Guwahati executive director Prof Ashok Puranik, registrar Dr Hiren Deka, faculty members, dignitaries, students and their families.
