GUWAHATI, Feb 14: Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal on Saturday launched a sharp attack on the Congress, alleging that the party had “betrayed and weakened Assam,” while crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi with restoring security, stability and rapid development across the state.
Addressing public meetings here, Sonowal said Assam’s transformation from a state once marked by fear and instability to one witnessing major infrastructure expansion reflects a decisive shift in governance.
He alleged that Congress policies, including the now-repealed Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunals) Act, had undermined the rights and security of Indian citizens in Assam, adding that peace and security today have created the foundation for what he described as a historic phase of development.
Sonowal also accompanied Prime Minister Modi and chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma earlier in the day during the inauguration of the Emergency Landing Facility at Moran in Dibrugarh district, stating that the project strengthens both strategic preparedness and regional infrastructure capacity.
He further highlighted recent infrastructure and institutional developments, including the inauguration of the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu connecting Guwahati with North Guwahati, the launch of the Northeast National Data Centre, the commencement of academic activities at IIM Guwahati, and the introduction of electric buses to promote sustainable urban mobility.
Describing the bridge as a symbol of connectivity and aspiration, Sonowal said such initiatives demonstrate a coordinated push toward building a modern and future-ready Assam.
The Dibrugarh Lok Sabha MP said that where there was once neglect, corruption and misgovernance, there is now transparency, investment and nation-building under the present leadership.
He also claimed that improved peace and stability have boosted investor confidence, with industries and institutions increasingly looking at Assam as a promising destination.
Calling upon party workers to prepare for the upcoming elections, Sonowal reiterated that the BJP’s guiding principle places the nation first, followed by the party and the individual, and stressed the need to work with dedication while preserving Assam’s heritage and cultural identity.
He asserted that Assam is no longer defined by instability but by infrastructure growth, confidence and development, adding that under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, the Northeast is emerging as a key driver of the country’s progress.
