CSIR-NEIST: Treading glorious path towards scientific, technological innovations

JORHAT, Oct 14: The CSIR-North-East Institute of Science & Technology (CSIR-NEIST) is the one and only multidisciplinary laboratory of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India, located in Jorhat.

The institute has developed several sustainable technologies covering broad areas from environment to energy and agriculture to healthcare.

Over the years, the institute has generated more than 120 technologies.

The institute has celebrated its Diamond Jubilee of glorious existence of more than six decades contributing immensely to the economic, industrial and societal uplift of the North Eastern region in particular and the country as a whole.

Presently, Dr G Narahari Sastry, renowned scientist, leads the institute as its director. The institute is engaged in many R&D activities of regional and national importance for the benefit of the society. The CSIR Aroma Mission, Floriculture Mission are some of the priority projects of the Prime Minister of India for doubling the farmers’ income.

CSIR-NEIST is also implementing a project that is – Science & Technological Intervention for North East India (STINER) – which is a very ambitious, innovative and challenging project conceived and sponsored by Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Government of India focusing on social and economic development in the North Eastern Region.

The National Medicinal Plant Board (NMPB), Ministry of Ayush, Government of India has entrusted this institute with Regional cum Facilitation Centre to promote conservation, cultivation and processing of Medicinal Plants in this region.

CSIR-NEIST is working on CSIR-Aroma Mission and propagating the high yielding varieties of citronella and lemon grass, patchouli, Kaempferia galanga in NE states as well as other parts of the country through different NGOs stakeholders/aroma industries/plantation industries.

The institute has signed an agreement with more than 30 farmers’ groups/NGOs for propagating these aromatic plants in more than 3000 ha of land which has been covered under cultivation of these aromatic crops including installation of improved distillation units including establishment of marketing channel, besides Floriculture Mission, Nutraceuticals and Wellness Mission of CSIR.

Development of high yielding variety, production of quality planting materials of aromatic and medicinal plants, cultivation and demonstration of floricultural crops, installation of processing technologies, along with experimental field for such aroma, floriculture and medicinal plants are important activities being carried out for the benefit of the farmers and entrepreneurs in the North Eastern Region of India.

CSIR-North East Institute of Science & Technology (CSIR-NEIST) Jorhat successfully conducted first time ever in India the CSIR-Summer Research Training Programme (CSIR-SRTP 2020) to provide research-based training to undergraduate/postgraduate students and faculties of diverse disciplines from various colleges and institutes in India. The programme had given a unique opportunity to ignite the young minds of the country to inculcate scientific research during the unprecedented pandemic situation of Covid-19. The programme was initiated by CSIR-NEIST under the leadership of director Dr G Narahari Sastry and was inaugurated by Dr Shekhar C Mande, the then director general, CSIR on June 16, 2020.

More than 16,000 UG/PG students and faculties from various institutes/colleges across the country underwent the SRTP 2020.

The programme was coordinated by CSIR-NEIST and was mentored by the faculties from 38 CSIR laboratories as well as from different institutes/universities.

At present, CSIR has put in place CSIR@80: Vision & Strategy 2022 – New CSIR for New India. CSIR’s mission is “to build a new CSIR for a new India”, and CSIR’s vision is to “Pursue science which strives for global impact, the technology that enables innovation-driven industry and nurtures trans-disciplinary leadership thereby catalyzing inclusive economic development for the people of India”.
