SIVASAGAR, May 27: In response to recent cases of fatal gastrointestinal complications linked to the consumption of wild mushrooms in Geleki and surrounding areas, Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner Ayush Garg, IAS, along with Joint Director of Health, Dr. Makhan Kalita, has issued a public advisory urging residents to avoid consuming unidentified or wild mushrooms.
In an official release issued on May 26, the district administration warned that mushrooms commonly found in forests and along roadsides during the monsoon season may contain toxic compounds that pose serious health risks. Consumption of these mushrooms may lead to abdominal pain, vomiting, dry stools, headache, fever, and in some cases, can prove fatal.
The advisory further urged individuals who suspect they may have consumed poisonous mushrooms to immediately seek medical attention and report to the nearest health centre upon observing symptoms.
In light of these incidents, the Health Department has been conducting a series of awareness campaigns since early April to educate the public about the dangers of eating wild mushrooms.
Additional Commissioner of the District Health Department, Meenakshi Parme, expressed concern and grief over the recent incidents of food poisoning, particularly among residents in tea plantation areas. She emphasized the need for continued public education to prevent further casualties.
Authorities have urged citizens to exercise caution and cooperate with health advisories to avoid further health emergencies.
