GUWAHATI, March 20: Leader of Opposition in the Assam Assembly Debabrata Saikia on Friday filed nomination as Congress candidate from Nazira constituency in Sivasagar district.
The Congress is part of a six-party alliance for the April 9 state elections, with Raijor Dal, Assam Jatiya Parishad, CPI(M), CPI(ML)L and All Party Hills Leaders Conference.
Saikia was accompanied by state party president Gaurav Gogoi and other leaders as he submitted his nomination seeking a fourth straight term from Nazira, known as a stronghold of his family.
His father and former chief minister, late Hiteswar Saikia, and mother Hemoprava Saikia had earlier represented Nazira in the assembly.
The Congress leader expressed confidence in winning his seat, as well as the opposition alliance coming to power in the state, ending the 10-year-long rule of the BJP-led NDA. Counting of votes for the 126-member Assam Assembly will be done on May 4. (PTI)
