SIVASAGAR, Sept 13: Sivasagar has been enveloped in sorrow as it mourns the passing of Pranobjit Chaliha, affectionately known as ‘Romuda’. He was a towering figure in the realm of Assamese nationalism and a respected veteran in the world of sports. Romuda breathed his last at AMCH, Dibruhagh, around 2:30 pm on Wednesday at the age of 73, succumbing to a prolonged battle with bronchial illness.
Pranobjit Chaliha played a pivotal role in the Assam Movement and was incarcerated over a hundred times for his involvement in anti-government protests and his impassioned speeches. Despite his commanding presence in the political landscape, Chaliha never aspired to hold a ministerial position in the AGP ministry under Prafulla Mahanta’s leadership. He remained an unwavering advocate for the common people and vociferously criticised corrupt politicians and others for betraying the nation.

During his tenure as the general secretary of AASU, Sivasagar unit from 1972 to 1974, Chaliha was incarcerated a record 127 times. He made headlines for his fiery protests against the government during Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s public address in Sivasagar in 1979. Additionally, Chaliha served as the general secretary of the Sivasagar Sports Association from 1996 until last year.
Pranobjit Chaliha leaves behind his wife Raka Chaliha, son Shringkhal Chaliha, and daughter Karbi. His legacy as a passionate advocate for Assamese nationalism and uncompromising champion of the common people will be remembered and revered by many.
