Demow Press Club observes Sudhakantha Divas

DEOW, Nov 6: Under the patronage of the Demow Press Club, the 12th Sudhakantha Divas was organised at the Demow Jyoti Bishnu Cultural Building (Demow Public Hall) on Monday and Tuesday. On Monday, the event commenced with the hoisting of the Demow Press Club flag by Umesh Chetia, president of Demow Press Club. Following this, the third annual All-Assam Bhupendra Sangeet Competition took place at the same venue, divided into two groups, with participants coming from various places across Assam.

On Tuesday, the program continued with a drawing competition held in the afternoon at the Demow Jyoti Bishnu Cultural Building. Students from different schools in Demow participated in this event. In the evening, Dr Gitali Saikia, head of the English department at HCDG College Nitaipukhuri, lit an earthen lamp in front of Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s portrait. A documentary on Dr Bhupen Hazarika, prepared by the Demow Press Club, was also screened. Later in the evening, a cultural program was held where students from various schools in Demow performed songs and dances, followed by a prize distribution ceremony for the competition winners.

In the All-Assam Bhupendra Sangeet Competition, group A winners were Debolina Deori (first prize), Progya Konwar and Adriani Gogoi (second prize), Ayushman Gogoi and Urvi Chetia (third prize), with Joyshree Kalita and Yekham Muhung receiving consolation prizes. In group B, Urmimala Gogoi secured the first prize, Silpi Buragohain the second prize, while Chayanika Basumatary and Lakhi Priya Dehingia shared the third prize, and Kaberi Phukan received a consolation prize. Cash prizes and certificates were awarded to the winners of both the Bhupendra Sangeet and drawing competitions.

The drawing competition was also divided into two groups: from classes 1 to 6, Samiran Saikia won first prize, Prapti Progya Gogoi came second, and Taikhampha Phukan took third place. In the group from classes 7 to 10, Gitanjali Borah won first prize, Taiseng Mung Phukan second, and Hirok Jyoti Deori third.

Dipak Borah, Nitaipukhuri correspondent of Dainik Janambhumi, was felicitated by the Demow Press Club for receiving the Best Rural Journalism Award for 2024 in memory of Robin Moran, presented by Dainik Janambhumi. Devashree Boruah, a resident of Deodubi village, was awarded an educational scholarship from the Demow Press Club for securing 96.2 percent in the HS Final Examination 2023.

The program was attended by prominent figures, including Bokul Dutta, principal of Demow Higher Secondary School; Uday Dutta, principal of Demow Girls High School; Ajay Kumar Gogoi, adviser of Demow Press Club; Annamuddin Ahmed, senior reporter from Sivasagar; other dignitaries, and members of the Demow Press Club.
