SIVASAGAR, Nov 6: The spirit of Dr Bhupen Hazarika, the legendary bard, echoed across Sivasagar and Demow as various organizations and individuals commemorated Dr Bhupen Hazarika Smriti Divas in remembrance of his timeless contributions.

In Sivasagar, the central event, organized by Sivasagar Zila Sahitya Sabha in collaboration with Samannay Sahitya Sabha, took place at the Desangmukh Vikram Sing Yien Memorial Khetra. The occasion commenced with a procession flagged off by Surjya Kumar Hazarika, President of the Sabha. Noteworthy speakers, including Sahityacharjya Dr Nahendra Padun and Dr Sabyasachi Mahanta, elaborated on Dr Hazarika’s profound connection with the renowned Mising singer Vikram Sing Yien, emphasizing the cultural harmony depicted in the iconic composition “Desang Mukhar Nixati.” The meeting witnessed the hoisting of the Sabha flag and the release of a souvenir by Dr Nirupoma Mahanta.

In Demow, a day-long program marked the day, with the Dr Bhupen Hazarika Memorial Singing competition organized by Demow Press Club. The event recognized Lakhipriya Dihingia, Kaberi Phukan, Irin Gogoi, Devalina Deori, Prantika Priyam Sarma, and Aslesha Sensuwa for their exceptional talents in the competition. Guests in the meeting highlighted Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s cinematic and musical contributions.

Meanwhile, in Amguri, the Puberun Cultural organization observed the ‘smriti divas.’ The event hosted distinguished guests and showcased a vibrant dance and musical program directed by Puja Hazarika, engaging the participation of students.

The day was a tribute to the essence and legacy of Dr Bhupen Hazarika, celebrating his enduring influence and the cultural amalgamation he embodied throughout his life.

 

Our Jorhat correspondent adds: Jorhat observed the 12th death anniversary of the revered Sudhakantha Dr Bhupen Hazarika with acts of philanthropy and creative engagement on Sunday.

The Jorhat district unit of Wariors, an organization dedicated to women’s empowerment and social welfare activities, paid tribute to the late maestro by distributing clothes to the underprivileged. Members of the organization offered garments to those in need near Nehru Park from the Wariors Clothes Bank. Embracing the spirit of Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s iconic song, ‘Manuhe Manuhar Babe,’ the distribution was held as a heartfelt gesture to commemorate his legacy.

Encouraging the community to contribute old but usable clothing to the bank, a representative of the organization emphasized the importance of extending support to the underprivileged and distressed individuals through such donations.

Concurrently, another event marked the occasion as the Jorhat district unit of Anusuchit Jati Chatra Sanstha, in collaboration with Anusuchit Jati Parishad and Anusuchit Jati Mahila Sanmilan, organized a drawing competition for children at the Millenium Park. This artistic initiative added a creative dimension to the day, engaging the younger generation to honor the memory of the cultural luminary.

Both acts of charity and creativity exemplified the diverse ways in which the people of Jorhat honored and remembered Dr Bhupen Hazarika on the solemn occasion of his death anniversary.

 

Our Dibrugarh correspondent adds: The BCPL Staff Welfare Committee orchestrated a heartfelt “Shradhanjali Programme” on Sunday in remembrance of the 12th death anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika, the revered musician, lyricist, singer, and filmmaker.

Located in BCPL Township, Barbaruah, the event commenced with the lighting of earthen lamps and the laying of rich floral tributes before the portrait of Dr Bhupen Hazarika, a gesture made by senior officials of BCPL. A cultural program was also organized to celebrate the works and legacy of Sudhakantha.

Pranjal Changmai, Managing Director of BCPL, graced the occasion as the chief guest, joined by senior company officials, employees, and their families. A special invitee of the evening was the esteemed cultural icon and artist, Shri Ratan Choudhury, who shared a close association with Dr Bhupen Hazarika since 1982. Recognizing his contributions and rapport with the legendary figure, Managing Director Pranjal Changmai felicitated Choudhury with a Phoolam Gamosa, a citation, jaapi, and a xorai.

Ratan Choudhury has been a prominent figure in notable events such as Dipu Sahitya Sabha in 1982, Bihu tours alongside Dr Hazarika in the same year, and various communal harmony programs.

Arun Hazarika, Assistant Professor of the Performing Arts department at Dibrugarh University, was also present at the Shradhanjali programme. Well-known as a singer and composer at All India Radio and Doordarshan TV, he was among the invited artists to pay tribute to the maestro.

The event was filled with cultural performances that showcased the creations of the legendary Dr Bhupen Hazarika, presented by BCPL employees, their family members, and the invited artists. The evening served as a poignant tribute to the memory and contributions of the musical giant.

 

Our Demow correspondent adds: A two-day program, honoring the legacy of Dr Bhupen Hazarika, Sudhakantha Divas, was organized at the Demow Jyoti-Bishnu Cultural Building (Demow Public Hall) under the patronage of the Demow Press Club.

The event on Saturday commenced with the hoisting of the flag by Umesh Chetia, President of Demow Press Club. An All Assam Basis Bhupendra Sangeet Competition, inaugurated by Hamida Begum, Assistant Professor of the Sociology Department at Demow College, featured two categories. In the lower category, Debolina Deori, Prantika Priyam Sarma, and Aslesha Sensua secured the first, second, and third prizes, respectively. In the higher category, Lakhipriya Dehingia, Kaberi Phukan, and Irin Gogoi emerged as the first, second, and third prize winners.

On Sunday, the second day of the program, a drawing competition was held in two categories involving students from various schools in Demow. In the lower category, Jutika Gogoi, Sourav Gogoi, and Prerana Deori secured the top three positions. The winners were awarded cash prizes and certificates.

In the evening, an earthen lamp was jointly lit in front of Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s photo by Dr Bipul Gogoi, Retired Professor of Demow College, and Dr Gitali Saikia, HOD of the English Department at HCDG College, Nitaipukhuri. Thowra MLA Sushanta Borgohain inaugurated the cultural program where a documentary prepared by the Demow Press Club about Dr Bhupen Hazarika was screened. Local students and artists showcased their talents in song and dance performances.

The event witnessed the presence of various dignitaries, including Bokul Dutta, Headmaster of Demow Higher Secondary School, Pollobita Gogoi Boruah, Chairman of Demow Municipal Board, and other esteemed guests.
