DIPHU, Dec 1: In a vibrant celebration of Assamese culture and agricultural tradition, Dr Numal Momin, Deputy Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, participated in a traditional harvest-cutting ceremony in his native village on Saturday. The event brought together villagers, farmers, elders and youths to mark the season of abundance with gratitude and unity.
Dr Momin took part in the ceremonial cutting of the first sheaves of paddy, a ritual symbolising prosperity, hard work and the enduring bond between the people and their land. His presence was warmly received by the farming community, who expressed joy at seeing their representative engage personally in this meaningful tradition.
Following the ceremony, Dr Momin shared a traditional Assamese lunch with the villagers, fostering camaraderie and reinforcing the spirit of togetherness. A notable highlight of the gathering was the serving of pomelo (robab tenga), enjoyed amid laughter, storytelling and nostalgic conversations.
Addressing the community, the Deputy Speaker praised the farmers for their dedication and highlighted the importance of agriculture as the backbone of Assam’s identity. He noted that preserving such customs not only honours tradition but also strengthens social harmony within the village.
The event concluded with a sense of cultural pride and collective bonding, celebrating both the harvest and the heritage that sustains it.
