DIBRUGARH, Oct 30: In a bid to foster the conservation of sparrows, the distribution of “Organic Bamboo Birds Nests” took place among the teachers and students at a special program held at the Indri Miri conference hall in Dibrugarh University on Monday.
The event was organized by Bishram Ghar with the primary objective of raising awareness about sparrow conservation.
Addressing the attendees, President Pranab Kumar Talukdar emphasized the pressing need to protect the house sparrows facing a looming threat of extinction. He highlighted the stark decline in sparrow populations due to various factors, such as urbanization, noise pollution, and changes in home structures like replacing ventilators with air conditioners. Talukdar also emphasized the detrimental effects of radiation from mobile towers, pollution, pesticides in agriculture, and harmful gas emissions on sparrow populations.
Professor L.R. Saikia, Head of the Department of Life Science at Dibrugarh University, echoed similar concerns, emphasizing habitat loss as a significant factor contributing to the declining sparrow populations. Saikia encouraged collective efforts towards sparrow conservation.
Renowned Ornithologist Firoz Hussain delivered a compelling presentation on the endangered birds of Assam. Hussain highlighted the adverse impact of urbanization and pollution on the sparrow population, stating that the declining numbers could lead to their extinction if not addressed promptly.
He further pointed out the impact of pesticide use in tea gardens, affecting the natural habitat of birds like sparrows and Marsh Babblers, crucial insect-eaters. Hussain stressed the importance of conserving these sensitive species to maintain a healthy and balanced ecosystem.
The program witnessed the presence of Retired Brigadier Surendra Prasad, students from Dibrugarh University, and various schools and colleges in Dibrugarh.
In a symbolic gesture to support sparrow conservation efforts, Bamboo bird nests were presented to both teachers and students during the program. The event succeeded in raising awareness and highlighting the urgent need to protect these integral bird species.
The efforts of Bishram Ghar and the active involvement of educational institutions mark a significant step forward in promoting the conservation of sparrows in the region.
