Dr Gitaly Saikia awarded Deba Kumar Bora Memorial Media Fellowship by AAJU

JORHAT, June 29: The All Assam Journalists’ Union (AAJU), Jorhat district committee, announced the recipient of the Deba Kumar Bora Memorial Media Fellowship during a meeting held on Thursday. The fellowship has been awarded to Dr Gitaly Saikia, sub-editor of ‘Niyomia Barta’, Guwahati. The research topic chosen by Dr Saikia is ‘Bhogdoi is in Danger: Threat to its Biodiversity’.

This is the first time that the AAJU, Jorhat District Committee, has instituted the fellowship. The fellowship amount of Rs 20,000 will be provided by Barnali Saikia in memory of her late husband, Deba Kumar Bora. Barnali Saikia, the wife of late Deba Bora, expressed that this fellowship is a small contribution to preserve the memory of her late husband and contribute to the betterment of society and the environment.

She hopes that the research conducted by Dr Gitaly Saikia will draw the attention of the government and the public towards the preservation and protection of Bhogdoi river, which was once the lifeline of Jorhat.

Dr Gitaly Saikia was selected by a three-member expert panel consisting of Dr Suryya Chetia, assistant professor at Assam Women’s University, Dr Nilima Bora, former vice principal of Jorhat College (Amalgamated), and Devajit Baruah, a journalist. Among 54 entries, Dr Gitaly Saikia stood out as the chosen recipient.

The meeting was addressed by Jogesh Ojha, president of the AAJU, Jorhat district committee, and Navajyoti Boruah, convenor of the Deba Kumar Bora Memorial Media Fellowship Committee.

In addition to the fellowship, AAJU has planned two other programs for this year, including a Journalists Exchange Program with Nagaland and a visit to the Lok Sabha to observe the functioning of the lower house of Parliament.
