JORHAT, July 5: The second Deba Kumar Bora Memorial Media Fellowship, instituted by the All Assam Journalists’ Union (AAJU), Jorhat District Committee, has been awarded to Nabul Konwar, the correspondent of Doordarshan News channel based in Nazira.
Addressing reporters here on Thursday, AAJU Jorhat district unit president Jogesh Ojha and convenor of the Deba Kumar Bora Memorial Media Fellowship Committee, Navajyoti Boruah, announced that Konwar was selected from several applicants for the fellowship by a three-member panel. He will conduct a study on ‘The Role of Media in Youth Empowerment through Micro-farming to Strengthen the State Economy’.
Konwar will receive Rs 20,000 from the journalists’ body to conduct the study and is required to submit his report within six months.
During the event moderated by Dulal Kalita, secretary of AAJU Jorhat District Committee, Barnali Saikia Bora, the wife of late Deba Kumar Bora and a member of the Assam State Women’s Commission, mentioned that the fellowship is a small contribution to preserve her husband’s memory and support a cause beneficial to society and the environment.
She expressed hope that Konwar’s study on this topic would garner attention from the government and the public, contributing to the enhancement of the agricultural sector.
It is noteworthy that late Deba Kumar Bora was a prominent leader of AASU during the Assam agitation, a former minister in the first Prafulla Kumar Mahanta-led government, former editor of Dainik Janambhumi, and press adviser to the late chief minister Tarun Gogoi.
The fellowship selection panel included Dr Suryya Chetia, head of the Department of Mass Communications at Assam Women’s University; Dr Nilima Bora, former vice-principal of Jorhat College (Amalgamated); and Devajit Baruah, a journalist from Jorhat.
