MANGALDAI, May 10: In a commendable act of compassion, the South Borsajai Maidan Durga Mandir Nyas from Guwahati has extended support to a specially-abled student battling severe physical challenges.
Kukil Saikia, a resident of Samola under Deomornai in Darrang district, suffers from a rare condition referred to as ‘Godh’ disease, which has left both his legs paralysed. Dependent on a tricycle for mobility, the determined young man has refused to let his disability hinder his dreams. Despite being unable to attend school regularly, he successfully cleared the Higher Secondary Final Examination this year and now aspires to pursue graduation. However, the nearly three-kilometre distance to the nearest college has become a major hurdle.
Responding to his plight, a team from the South Borsajai Maidan Durga Mandir Nyas visited Kukil’s residence and presented a cheque of Rs 50,000 for his advanced medical treatment and higher education.
The Nyas was represented by president Akhil Goswami, secretary Hiren Saharia and other members including Hridayananda Das, Dhaniram Baisya, Pankaj Kumar Medhi, Ramen Talukdar, Dandi Kumar Boro and Bishnu Ram Saliha.
A brief felicitation programme was organised in the courtyard of Kukil’s house and was anchored by reporter Ganesh Dutta. Addressing the gathering, South Borsajai Maidan Durga Mandir Nyas secretary Hiren Saharia said, “We are delighted to stand beside Kukil today and offer him a little love, courage and inspiration. We sincerely thank the humanitarian organisations ‘Asha’r Alok – Manuh e Manuhor Babe’ (Darrang, Assam) and ‘Karunadhara’ – Darrang District Committee for connecting us with Kukil and facilitating this support.”
President Akhil Goswami encouraged the young student, saying, “Never lose hope. Keep moving forward. We will always stand by you.”
Social worker Jonmoni Deuri informed the audience that efforts are being made to provide Kukil with an electronic wheelchair. Meanwhile, ‘Asha’r Alok’ announced the donation of books and notebooks, while journalist Sangita Devi personally contributed Rs 3,000 to the student.
Notable attendees included former AASU leader and social activist Niranjan Saikia, Harichandra Sharma, president of ‘Asha’r Alok’, treasurer Golok Bora, Tarun Saikia, Bhargav Jyoti Saikia, Gaon Pradhan Bikas Saikia, Tapan Chandra Saikia and others.
It may be mentioned that ‘Asha’r Alok’ had earlier provided Kukil with a conventional wheelchair a few years ago.
Locals have expressed hope that local MLA Dr Paramananda Rajbongshi and Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma will also take personal interest in Kukil’s further treatment and education.
