Encounter claims life in Kokrajhar

KOKRAJHAR, April 1: An encounter in Kokrajhar district on Thursday reportedly killed a person who was allegedly involved in dacoity activities in Chirang district. The encounter took place at the Ultapani forest area along the Indo-Bhutan border area of the Kokrajhar district. The slain has been identified as Sanjula Wary (26) of the Sapkata area under the Gossaigaon sub-division.

According to police, after receiving intelligence input, Kokrajhar police apprehended Sanjula Wary (26) on Thursday. Notably, he is also reported to be a member of the NLFB Udalguri camp and had recently formed an extremist gang of approximately 10-15 members. Sources further revealed that he was personally involved in the recent dacoity and firing incident at Bithani village under Amteka of Chirang district.

As per information, Wary was shot while trying to escape custody and rushed to Kokrajhar Rup Nath Brahma Civil Hospital where he was declared brought dead by the doctor. Earlier, the police were able to seize Rs 1 lakh, gold ornaments, and a 7.65 mm pistol along with four rounds of live ammunition from his possession.

SP Kokrajhar Vijay Prateek Thube commented, “Wary, a former member of NLFB and the mastermind of a series of dacoities in the Chirang district, was shot by the police while he was trying to escape custody. The police administration has been taking strict steps against the anti-social activities in the district. We will be further vigilant in the future.”
