NAGAON, Dec 5: As part of the Assam government’s ongoing efforts to free government land and reserved forest areas from encroachment, the Nagaon district administration and police on Friday jointly carried out a major eviction drive at Rupahihat Bhakatgaon under the Samaguri revenue circle.
The operation, which began at 8 am, targeted the clearance of approximately 38 bighas of grazing-reserve land.
The area had been occupied by 86 families who had constructed houses and were residing there illegally.
Notices were issued a month ago by the Samaguri revenue circle officer directing the encroachers to vacate the land, prompting many to leave beforehand.
During Friday’s exercise, around 100 pucca and kutcha houses were demolished.
The eviction drive concluded peacefully, with nearly 400 police personnel deployed to maintain law and order.
District Commissioner Debashish Sarma, Senior Superintendent of Police Swapnanil Deka, and other senior officials from the district administration and police were present at the site during the operation.
