Experts delve into causes and preventive measures of Cancer in Tezpur

TEZPUR Feb 24: ’Girls aged between 9 and 14 could be assured 98 percent protection from Cervical Cancer in our country by administering cancer vaccines.’ A leading oncologist of the country and director of Shankara Cancer and Research Institute of Tezpur Dr Venkata Pradeep Babu Koyalla said.

Koyalla noted this while speaking at the 1st Northeast Community Awareness Plenary (NECAP 2025) held on Sunday.

It was held under the aegis of Viswapragna Foundation, in collaboration with Tezpur College, Darrang College, Indian Society of Medical and Paediatric Oncology (ISMPO) and the Indian Society of Cervical Cancer Pathology (ISCCP).

The conference was organised at Tezpur College Conference Hall with the aim to raise community awareness on Cancer and Autism, featuring expert discussions by distinguished professionals from Tata Memorial Hospital, Apollo Chennai, AIG Hyderabad, Kidwai Memorial Bangalore, and esteemed faculty from LGBRIMH.

Highlighting the root causes of excessive cancer in North East of India Dr Pradeep Babu further said ‘Excessive pesticides in vegetables are also one of the prime causes of cancer’. Analysing the food habit of people of the North East India Dr Pradip Babu further said that using of excessive pesticides treated vegetables, shikhar, gutkha and excessive use of raw betel nuts led to be the victim of cancer .During his speech he urged all to remain aware of food habit and environment as one of the measure of protecting ourselves from cancer.’

‘There is a need for more health check-ups and dietary awareness along with proper treatment after diagnosis is the way to save our life from cancer.’ Commented the experts participated in the programme. Leading specialist in Medical Oncology Dr Ghanasyam Biswas, Dr Sujith Kumar Mullapally, Dr Govind Babu, Gynaecological oncologist Dr Leela Digumarti, Oncologist Dr Pavani Medisetty and several noted oncologist expressed their views on awareness and prevention of cancer in the programme started with lighting of lantern by Distinguished Professor of Medical Oncology Raghunadharao Digumarti alongwith Dr Polashmani Saikia, Principal, Darrang College and Dr Manoj Kumar Hazarika, Principal, Tezpur College.

A community Awareness Action Group was also formed in the programme attended by students, faculties and people of Tezpur and its vicinity.
