The fishery officials also seized fishing nets and several boats used by those in illegal fishing activities.

Earlier, the department had also organised a number of awareness meetings with local communities in Panidihing and Magarahat to dissuade people from catching fish during the period from April to July. However, some unscrupulous people continued fishing despite a ban imposed by the government.

Meanwhile, district magistrate of Sivasagar, Aditya Vikram Yadav through an order on Thursday banned the use of fishing nets of different sizes through-out the district from April 1 to July 15 in accordance with the Assam Fishery Amendment Rule 2005 and the Assam Fishery Act 1953.  Any use of Borjal or Mahajal or Bhorjal or Fassijal or any other nets with meshes less than two and half inches square during the breeding season was also banned for 60 days from April 15.
