Five slender-billed vultures translocated at Tewaripal in Biswanath

Soft release centre to aid conservation efforts and boost declining population

BISWANATH CHARIALI, March 20: Five slender-billed vultures were translocated from the Vulture Conservation Breeding Centre at Rani to the Biswanath Wildlife Division’s vulture soft release centre at Tewaripal, under the anti-poaching camp in the western range, on Friday. The vultures will be released into the wild after a period of 2–3 months, following the soft release method. It is a collaborative project of the Bombay Natural History Society, Kaziranga and the Assam Forest Department.

The vulture translocation event was attended by and the vultures were released inside the aviary jointly by Dr Sonali Ghosh (Director of Kaziranga National Park), Ritu Paban Borah (DFO, Biswanath) Dr Vinay Gupta (PCCF, Assam), Piraisoodan B (Director of Nameri National Park) Praveen Pardeshi (president, BNHS) Kishore Rithe (Director, BNHS) Sachin Ranade (Assistant Director, BNHS) and heads of nearby EDCs. “This event will play a crucial role in stabilising the drastically declining slender-billed vulture population,” said Gitartha Borah, Biologist, BNHS.
