GUWAHATI, Aug 25: At least eleven families illegally settled in the city’s Beharbari area were evicted by the East Kamrup forest division on Thursday.
The evicted families were unlawfully settling at Seuj Nagar under Garbhanga reserve forest.
According to a source of the Assam government’s forest department, the illegal settlers fled the spot after getting to know the eviction drive in advance.
Notably, on August 3 last, the east Kamrup forest division, led by range forest officer Pulin Mahanta carried out an eviction drive in which 14 such illegally settled families were evicted.

The source said, “Despite the eviction drive carried out on August 3, at least another 11 families made fresh occupation illegally at certain areas of the reserved forest at Seuj Nagar. Immediately, we carried out the second eviction drive on Thursday and evacuated the unlawful settlers.”
However, on Thursday, the forest department could not nab the culprits as they fled the spot prior to the arrival of the evicting forest officials.
