MARGHERITA, Oct 29: The Margherita Block Congress Committee on Tuesday hosted a large-scale felicitation event at the Margherita Congress Bhawan to honour Pradyut Bordoloi, the former Margherita MLA and two-term Nagaon MP.
Pradyut Bordoloi, a distinguished Congress leader in the region, was joined by his wife, Rani Bordoloi; son, Pratik Bordoloi, who is the state secretary of the IT Cell Assam Pradesh Congress Committee; Tinsukia District Congress Committee president Jayanta Kalita; Avinash Gogoi; Manoranjan Borgohain; Karna Bahadur Chetry; Sibanath Chetia; Md Toufik Khan; and other prominent Congress leaders. More than 500 Congress leaders and workers attended the grand felicitation programme.
The event began with a grand motorcycle rally starting at Powai Gate and concluding at Margherita Congress Bhawan, where over 100 motorbikes and vehicles accompanied Pradyut Bordoloi in a spirited procession.
Upon arrival, Pradyut Bordoloi was greeted with flowers and a traditional Adivasi Jhumur dance, embodying the cultural pride of the community.
In addition to the Margherita Block Congress Committee, the ceremony saw participation from various local Congress bodies, including the Margherita Assembly Youth Congress Committee, Margherita NSUI, Margherita Mahila Congress Committee, Margherita Sewa Dal, Congress Gorkha Cell, and the Minority Cell, alongside more than 100 other organisations from across the Tinsukia district. Pradyut Bordoloi received traditional Assamese honours, including the phulam gamosa, xorai, japi, and cheleng chador.
Addressing the media, Pradyut Bordoloi reflected on his deep-rooted connection to Margherita, describing it as both his birthplace and workplace.
He expressed heartfelt gratitude, recalling his journey as a four-time elected MLA and cabinet minister from Margherita. “The love and respect I’ve received from the people of Margherita are immeasurable,” Bordoloi remarked.
Pradyut Bordoloi also addressed the current state of the coal industry in Margherita, expressing concern over the impact of unregulated coal syndicates under the patronage of chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, state minister Pijush Hazarika, and Margherita MLA Bhaskar Sharma.
Pradyut Bordoloi noted the precarious condition of Northeastern Coalfields Coal India Ltd., Margherita, underlining the urgent need for revitalisation to protect local interests and livelihoods, as NEC CIL is the largest Maharatna company in Assam, where many people are directly dependent on it for their livelihood.
The entire programme was moderated by Tara Prasad Dehingia, president of the Margherita Block Congress Committee.
