KOKRAJHAR, July 16: In a significant crackdown on illegal wildlife trafficking, four suspected poachers, including a woman, were arrested by police during a late-night raid in Bijni, Chirang district, late night on Tuesday.
The arrests followed a coordinated operation based on specific intelligence inputs, officials said.
The raids were conducted at multiple locations under Bijni Police Station—specifically in Kumarshali, No 2 Choto Ladanguri, and Formaishali villages.
During the operation, a large cache of wildlife body parts and hunting tools was recovered from the residences of the accused.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Pradip Narzary alias Bhergo (45) of No 2 Choto Ladanguri, Samar Singh Basumatary (52) of Kumarshali, Kancha Daimary alias Budang (40), and Binashri Basumatary (40).
From the house of Pradip Narzary, police seized three iron traps used for hunting wild animals, four large wild boar tusks, a pistol grip, iron pipes suspected to be used in the fabrication of homemade firearms, metal bullets and springs, a broken trigger and barrel, suspected explosives, an electric drilling machine, and 18 toolboxes believed to be used for gun-making.
At Samar Singh Basumatary’s residence, police recovered a suspected three-inch piece of elephant tusk, bones of wild animals, five suspected animal teeth, a suspected tiger tongue and fur, pangolin scales, 20 porcupine quills, and several other dried and unidentified animal parts.
All four accused have been taken into custody at Bijni Police Station, and the recovered items have been seized for forensic examination and legal proceedings.
Police officials said further investigations are underway to determine the scale of the poaching network and its possible links to organised wildlife trafficking rings.
