MARGHERITA, July 30: The Assam Gramin Vikash Bank’s Margherita Branch in Segunbari, located under the 83rd Margherita Constituency in Tinsukia district, has come under scrutiny following allegations of large-scale financial fraud.
The Margherita Regional Student Union, along with affected villagers, has submitted a memorandum to the Margherita Co-District Commissioner demanding immediate investigation and justice.
At the centre of the controversy is Minoti Baruah, a resident of Makumkilla, who was engaged as a “Bank Mitra” (bank correspondent) by the Margherita Branch.
According to Rupam Baruah, Literary Secretary of the Tinsukia District Student Union, the accused allegedly used her official identity and position to fraudulently secure loans in the names of 25 to 30 unsuspecting villagers from Bhittor Powai and Makumkilla areas under Margherita Police Station.
After misappropriating the funds, Minoti Baruah reportedly absconded, leaving the villagers—who claim they were unaware of any such loans—in financial distress.
The alleged scam has raised questions about internal oversight at the bank, with the student union accusing bank officials of possible collusion.
The affected villagers, now burdened with repayment notices, have appealed for urgent relief and legal action against the accused.
The memorandum submitted to the Co-District Commissioner calls for a thorough probe into the bank’s operations, immediate arrest of the accused, and compensation for the victims.
The Margherita Regional Student Union, supported by local residents, continues to demand transparency and accountability.
The incident has triggered concern across the region, as villagers seek justice and a restoration of trust in the banking system.
