The programme was supported by the Assam Cancer Care Foundation (ACCF), Tinsukia unit and The Hans Foundation.
Delivering the opening address, IRCS general secretary Pabitra Borgohain highlighted the rising incidence of cancer, its symptoms and available treatment methods. He said the objective of organising awareness sessions and screening camps was to educate the public and enable early detection. Borgohain added that the IRCS Margherita Sub-District Branch has been conducting a series of such programmes across tea garden areas and other localities under Margherita, providing free health check-ups and medicines as part of its humanitarian mandate.
Specialist doctors, including Dr Mamta Upadhyay from ACCF Tinsukia and Dr Dayananda Singh from The Hans Foundation along with medical staff from both organisations, examined local residents during the camp. Nearly 250 patients were screened for oral cavity, breast and cervical cancer, besides tests for high blood pressure, diabetes, anaemia in pregnancy and other health concerns.
