SIVASAGAR, April 12: Freedom fighter and noted social worker Lalit Chandra Bhuyan passed away in his Sipahi Gaon residence on April 11 following a brief illness. He was 95. Bhuyan, born in Majuli Konhargaon, joined the freedom struggle against the British and had to leave his home as the British government issued an arrest warrant against him. He took shelter in the house of freedom fighters Mahendra Hazarika and Priyanath Baruah of Janjhi and continued to fight for freedom against British rule. In 1983, he settled in Sivasagar and served the people as a homeopathic doctor for a long period. Bhuyan is survived by his wife, sons and daughters.
His last rites were performed at Santiban Crematorium on Tuesday in presence of Sivasagar deputy commissioner Megha Nidhi Dahal, additional SP Sivasagar Debajit Nath, Sivasagar police officers, freedom fighter Gakul Gogoi and other dignitaries.
