GUWAHATI, March 9: Two employees of the British High Commission have been questioned by the Assam Police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) in the national capital, in connection with Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh.
“The SIT team interrogated the two British High Commission employees to gather more information about their ties to Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, who is named in an Assam Police FIR for allegedly attempting to disturb communal harmony. Sheikh is also under investigation for his alleged involvement in obtaining sensitive national security information,” said a senior police official on condition of anonymity on Sunday.
He further said that the SIT has also questioned an environmental scientist in connection with this investigation.
Earlier, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed that the SIT, which was established to probe the links between Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and his wife Elizabeth Gogoi to Pakistan, has made significant progress in its initial investigation.
“The SIT has uncovered important evidence related to Pakistani national Ali Sheikh, who has been questioned for his multiple visits to India and controversial social media posts expressing an intense interest in Assam’s politics. Sheikh visited India with a large Pakistani delegation, which included the Attorney General of Pakistan,” Sarma had said.
According to CM Sarma, Sheikh and his team made frequent visits to India until 2018, often staying in small hotels to avoid public attention.
“We are investigating the entire network related to this Pakistani national. If necessary, we will seek assistance from Interpol,” Sarma added, noting that he has briefed Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the developments.
A four-member SIT was formed to investigate the alleged Pakistani links of Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and his wife Elizabeth Gogoi.
In response to CM Sarma’s allegations, Gaurav Gogoi, the Member of Parliament from Jorhat constituency, stated that he is open to any investigation regarding the matter.
The Chief Minister had previously raised questions about why Gaurav Gogoi met with the Pakistan High Commissioner and later raised questions concerning national security and defence in Parliament.
