GUWAHATI, July 29: In a dramatic turn of events in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Assam BJP MP Dilip Saikia launched a scathing, albeit veiled, attack on Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, alleging links between Gogoi’s wife and Pakistan.

The remarks triggered strong protests from the Congress bench, resulting in a temporary disruption of proceedings.

Speaking during a debate on Operation Sindoor, Saikia claimed that Gogoi’s wife had been “on the payroll of Pakistan for several years” and that the Congress MP himself had visited Pakistan at least 19 times.

Without offering documentary evidence, Saikia said the alleged ties were under investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the Assam government.

“The SIT is probing the connections of Gaurav Gogoi and his wife with Pakistan. The investigation has led to startling revelations, and the final report will be submitted soon,” Saikia told the House.

The BJP MP further accused Pakistani media of using Gogoi’s recent parliamentary speech on Operation Sindoor to criticise Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian government.

“Just look at Pakistan’s media coverage today—they have repeatedly cited Gaurav Gogoi’s speech to attack us,” Saikia said, referring to the Congress leader’s sharp critique of the government during Monday’s debate.

As Saikia continued to press on with his allegations, the Congress MPs erupted in protest, shouting slogans and demanding that the BJP leader’s remarks be expunged from the record.

Despite the commotion, Saikia remained defiant, reiterating his claims and accusing Gogoi of fleeing the House when it was the BJP’s turn to respond.

“We heard his entire speech yesterday. But when we were given the chance to respond, he was not present. This is not acceptable in a parliamentary democracy,” Saikia said.

The allegations have added another layer of intensity to the political storm surrounding Operation Sindoor, with both sides trading barbs amid a highly charged atmosphere.

The matter is likely to escalate further as both BJP and Congress dig in their heels over what is rapidly becoming one of the most contentious parliamentary sessions in recent memory.

Meanwhile, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday also launched a scathing attack on Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, following Gogoi’s sharp criticism of the government’s handling of Operation Sindoor during a speech in Parliament.

In a strongly worded post on X, Sarma accused the Jorhat MP of aligning with Pakistan’s interests. “The speech delivered by our MP from Jorhat in Parliament yesterday proved beyond doubt that he acts on behalf of Pakistan,” the Chief Minister wrote.

Calling Gogoi “a disgrace to Assam” and “a betrayal of our pride as proud Indians,” Sarma’s remarks come amid heightened political tensions over the Centre’s narrative on the military operation and national security.
