GUWAHATI, Oct 8: Guwahati International Airport Limited (GIAL) marked the successful completion of its second year in its 50-year concession period for the operations, management, and development of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBI Airport), Guwahati. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) handed over the management of the airport to GIAL, a subsidiary of Adani Airports, on October 8, 2021.
The anniversary celebration took place at the current terminal building and was attended by GIAL staff, officers, and other airport stakeholders. Several senior officers of GIAL, along with Senior Commandant of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), LM Thakur, shared their thoughts on the occasion and reminisced about the journey.
During the two-year period, GIAL has exceeded the expectations for airport management and development. The company has devised a robust Master Plan for the entire 50-year duration of its concession. This vision includes transforming the airport into a regional hub, enabling citizens to reach any major airport in the country and return home within 24 hours. In the international sector, GIAL’s vision is to make LGBI Airport a regional hub connecting to South East Asia. Guwahati’s strategic location as the gateway to the East makes it ideal for international air connectivity for the entire eastern part of India, saving both time and money for travelers. GIAL also envisions developing a perishable cargo market in the region.
Utpal Baruah, Chief Airport Officer, spoke about the company’s efforts to collaborate with Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Meghalaya to develop a robust tourism industry. He expressed gratitude for the support of local citizens and governments, which has given GIAL the confidence to drive economic changes in the Northeast region through enhanced air connectivity, thereby making the airport a significant economic driver for the entire region.
