TEZPUR, July 17: On Sunday, the world observed Global Snake Day, a significant annual event. To mark the occasion, the renowned nature conservation organisation ‘Save Wildlife’ conducted an awareness programme at Tarun Asam Sangha on Sunday.
The day-long event witnessed the presence of distinguished guests, including Mintu Boro, the officer-in-charge of Tezpur Police Station (Sadar), Puspa Deka, former chairman of Tezpur Municipality board, and noted environmentalist Abdul Munnaf, among others.
During the event, Saurav Barkataki, the chairman of the organisation and a respected environmentalist, emphasised the crucial role of snakes in maintaining ecological balance. Barkataki, well-known as a true friend of snakes, highlighted that India is home to around three thousand species of snakes, with nearly three hundred of them found within the country. Barkataki, who also served as an ex-honorary wildlife warden of Sonitpur forest, has been actively involved in wildlife conservation, particularly in safeguarding snakes. He has played a vital role in raising awareness against the killing of snakes and motivating the public to rescue and release them in their suitable habitats.
Addressing various snake-related concerns, Barkataki also discussed the necessary measures to be taken when someone is bitten by a snake. He urged everyone to play a positive role in eradicating superstitious beliefs surrounding the treatment of snakebite victims by unqualified individuals. The esteemed guests present at the programme also stressed the importance of Global Snake Day. The event was gracefully conducted by Puspa Deka.
Furthermore, two young individuals, Bapdhan Das from the Pithakhowa area and Kaushik Nath from the Kawoimari area, were honoured during the programme for their exceptional work in rescuing snakes. They were presented with traditional Assamese items like japi, phulam gamosa, and a citation.
