JORHAT, July 7: Two persons involved in smuggling gold were arrested and a huge quantity of gold was seized from their possession at Mariani in Jorhat district of Assam on Thursday.
According to police reports, the gold was seized after conducting search operations in a train that was stopped at the Mariani railway junction in Jorhat. The train 15665 BG Express from Guwahati to Mariani was heading back towards Guwahati.
Shanmughan, Railway Protection Force head, NFR, based at Tinsukia division said that 697.8 gm of gold was recovered from their possession.
The arrested gold smugglers have been identified as Pratap Debnath, 45 years, of Itakholi, Garmur, Kumar gaon, Jorhat, Assam and accompanied by co-accused person, Prasanjit Ghosh alias Bappi, 48 years of Atilagaon, Ward No 16, Jorhat.
They are currently being interrogated by the police and GRP.
The search operations were conducted by inspector Raju Bahadur Chetry, OC, Jorhat PS, SI Dipjyoti Sonowal, TSI Jorhat PS, staff and Debojit Baruah, VDP secretary, Atilagaon at Jorhat and with the help of staff of Mariani, the RPF and the GRPS, Mariani.
