Governor Confers Shankar Lal Goenka Award On Prof G K Rath

GUWAHATI, April 7: On the special occasion of World Health Day, Assam Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi conferred the Shankar Lal Goenka Award of Dr B Borooah Cancer Institute on former chief of Cancer Institute, AIIMS, New Delhi and head of NCI-INDIA Prof G K Rath for his outstanding contribution in the field of oncology at a function held at BBCI, Guwahati on Thursday.

Speaking on the occasion, the Governor said that stalwarts in the field of cancer like Prof G K Rath can play a crucial role to promote research on the causative factors of cancers. They can play an important part in interacting with policy makers for the management of cancer.  Moreover, Prof Rath has visited all the north-eastern states several times and offered his technical expertise for establishment of Cancer centres and cancer control strategies, the Governor added. 

Prof Mukhi further hailed the Central government for earmarking Rs 129.00 crores for establishment of Adult and Paediatric Hematological Cancer Facilities at Dr B Borooah Cancer Institute. The institute has already started Bone Marrow Transplantation which is first of its kind in the public sector hospital in the entire north-eastern region. BBCI has also brought out a journal ‘Annals of Oncology Research & Therapy’ to provide a platform for publication of research work on cancer which according to the Governor would go a long way in knowledge sharing among all the stakeholders.    

The Governor also expressed happiness at the fact that various post graduate and super specialty courses in Oncology conducted by BBCI have contributed significantly to human resource generation. The holistic approach to treatment of cancer with care, compassion and empathy is the need of the hour for a better quality of life. It is therefore important to offer value based care to patients, the Governor exhorted.

The Governor said that he was happy that Sri Shankar Lal Goenka, chairman of Jeevan Ram Mungi Devi Charitable Trust has instituted this award at BBCI to recognise the contribution of renowned oncologists of the country. The Governor congratulated Prof Rath for his humble contributions he made to the field of cancer. The Governor also unveiled a book ‘Triple C in Cancer’ highlighting various aspects of Cancer for Control, Cure and Care. 

Chairman, Jeevan Ram Mungi Devi Charitable Trust, Guwahati, Shankar Lal Goenka, Director of Dr B Borooah Cancer Institute Dr A C Kataki, vice-chancellor, Srimanta Shankardeva University of Health Sciences Dr Dhruba Jyoti Bora, deputy director of BBCI Moushumi Bhattacharya, eminent film maker Jahnu Barua, staff of BBCI and a host of other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
