NAGAON, Dec 4: Rabindranath Tagore University (RTU), Hojai, inaugurated a new welfare initiative titled “Grace Corner” at its Srimanta Sankardeva Campus on Wednesday, marking a significant step toward promoting social responsibility and compassionate engagement within the academic community.
The centre was formally opened by Vice-Chancellor Prof Manabendra Dutta Choudhury, who emphasised that universities must nurture not only academic excellence but also values of empathy, responsibility and community service. He welcomed the initiative as a thoughtful effort to support individuals facing material challenges.
Registrar (i/c)-cum-Academic Registrar Dr Sandip Ratna addressed the gathering and outlined the purpose, mechanism and vision behind Grace Corner. He explained that the centre will operate as a dedicated space for collecting and distributing new and pre-owned but usable essentials such as clothes, footwear, books, utensils, stationery and daily-use items. He added that the initiative enhances the affective aspect of education by motivating students to engage in acts of sharing and empathy.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by faculty members, non-teaching staff, students and well-wishers of the university, marking a meaningful start to the welfare-oriented programme.
According to the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), donations can be made at the designated collection point in the Old Campus canteen area on any working day. Items will be sorted and displayed for distribution once every fifteen days. Grace Corner will remain open from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM on the first and third Thursdays of every month. Separate racks will be arranged for male and female items and beneficiaries will be allowed to receive one item at a time unless special permission is granted. The university authorities further announced that members of the RTU community and individuals from the wider society may contribute essential items, strengthening the culture of humanitarian service and collective support.
