GUWAHATI, Dec 1: Graduate Farmer, a social enterprise in Assam, has launched antibiotic-free poultry farming with the objective of increasing farmers’ income in rural areas and providing antibiotic-free poultry products in the market. Bapan Das, the director of the organisation, emphasised the initiative’s foundation in producing high-quality poultry products without the use of antibiotics.

The organisation is committed to responsible farming practices, contributing to a healthy ecosystem and offering consumers meat and eggs free from antibiotic residues. Shamim Chowdhury, another director of the organisation, highlighted the integration of modern techniques with traditional knowledge to raise chickens sustainably and reduce farmers’ expenses on medicines.

Currently, around 1,000 farmers in the three districts of Barak Valley—Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi—are involved in the initiative. These farmers receive training and necessary support from the organisation to set up their own farms.

Reflecting on the one-year journey of antibiotic-free poultry farming, the founder of Graduate Farmer expressed gratitude to the team and local farmers for their support. He emphasised the commitment to producing healthy poultry without antibiotics and the innovative approach taken by incorporating local herbs like turmeric, ginger, neem, and more into chicken-rearing practices.

The use of Indian herbs, known for their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, has become a crucial component in the chickens’ diet. Ginger enhances flavour and boosts the birds’ immune systems, while neem serves as a natural and effective way to control parasites, eliminating the need for synthetic chemicals. The initiative aligns with the growing demand for organic and antibiotic-free products in the market, promoting sustainable and healthy farming practices in the region.
