DIPHU, April 30: Executive Member (EM), Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), education, Richard Tokbi said Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong are at the bottom three in the last Gunotsav, but compared to previous years it has improved a lot.

In the recently declared Gunotsav result which was conducted in January last, the three districts, namely, West Karbi Anglong, Chirang and Karbi Anglong were ranked at bottom three. West Karbi Anglong was ranked at the bottom one and Karbi Anglong at the third bottom (lowest rank).
Tokbi said, “Though the two districts may be at the bottom, compared to previous results there is improvement. In 2022 West Karbi Anglong got only a single school with A+ grade, but this year it has increased to 36. In Karbi Anglong also, last year, only 7 schools got A+ grade, but this year the number of schools with A+ grade has increased to 135.”
According to Tokbi, one of the reasons for not being able to get to the top five is the teaching medium.
“The reason for the good results in the other districts is that they have their own medium. But here, children have difficulty with the Assamese medium. Many Assamese medium schools have to be converted to English medium. The state government has no objection in converting the medium and the education department, KAAC is doing it.” the EM said.
He also said KAAC is taking steps for development of Karbi medium schools so that children can be taught through their mother tongue at the foundation level. Communication is another problem. There are areas where there is no road communication. The distance of one school to another school is quite far making it difficult for teachers to reach the schools. Plan has been taken up to build teacher’s quarters at one centre, where teachers of neighbouring schools can stay together. This will ease the communication problem for teachers.
The EM mentioned that earlier there was only infrastructure development and academic development was not given due importance. Both infrastructure and academic development should be given equal importance.
Tokbi said it is the collective responsibility of all to bring change in the education of the two districts.
Tokbi said an assessment will be done with all teachers as to what can be done to get good results. Evaluation will be conducted with teachers in every education block and these meetings will be taken up very shortly. ‘Mission -2025’ is the goal set to reach the top five and there is time for it. But the cooperation of all is needed to achieve the goal.
