Guwahati, October 29: The Assam government has decided to donate its entire share of Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue earned from Roi Roi Binale, the final film associated with the late cultural icon Zubeen Garg, to the Kalaguru Artiste Foundation, an organisation founded by Zubeen to support artists, students, and people in need.
After the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that although there is no entertainment tax on cinema in Assam, the Centre collects GST on movie tickets. From the total GST collected, half of the amount is returned to the state. For tickets with 18 percent GST, 9 percent goes to Assam, and for tickets with 5 percent GST, 2.5 percent is returned to the state.
The Chief Minister said Roi Roi Binale, Zubeen Garg’s last film, will be released in theatres on October 31. Since GST is collected by the Centre and there is no provision for exemption, the state government decided to contribute its entire GST share from the film to the Kalaguru Artiste Foundation. The decision was taken after consulting Zubeen’s wife, Garima Garg.
The Kalaguru Artiste Foundation, established by Zubeen Garg, has been active in supporting financially weak artists, helping students pursue their education, and providing relief during floods and disasters. The Chief Minister stated that this initiative was a way to honour Zubeen’s contribution to Assam’s culture and his humanitarian spirit.
Roi Roi Binale, completed in Mumbai with the support of Zubeen’s close associates and film crew, now stands as both a cinematic tribute and a lasting symbol of the artist’s legacy in Assam’s cultural history.
