GUWAHATI, Oct 2: In Guwahati, infertility is becoming an increasingly prevalent issue as couples struggle to conceive. This is attributed to multiple factors such as delayed parenthood, unhealthy lifestyle choices, and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).

PCOS is a hormonal condition that affects women and can result in infertility. It is characterised by irregular menstrual periods, elevated levels of androgen, and the formation of tiny cysts on the ovaries. “PCOS is one of the major causes of infertility in women. Four out of ten patients who struggle with infertility have PCOS,” said Dr. Ratul Dutta, fertility specialist at Nova IVF Fertility Guwahati. “In addition to interfering with a woman’s menstrual cycle, this condition causes hormonal abnormalities that can make it challenging for women to become pregnant.”

He also said that PCOS is not the only factor contributing to the infertility crisis in Guwahati. Delayed parenthood is another main contributing factor. In Guwahati, many couples are delaying parenthood to focus on their professions or personal growth, facing difficulties when they do decide to have a family. It becomes increasingly difficult to conceive later in life as fertility naturally declines with age, especially in women. As more individuals wait until their 30s or even 40s to have children, they face reduced fertility, which is often worsened by underlying health issues.

Apart from age-related factors, lifestyle choices also contribute significantly to the increasing incidence of infertility. Modern lifestyle habits, such as disturbed sleep patterns, can impact hormone levels and fertility. Junk food consumption combined with an unhealthy diet can cause obesity and other health issues that affect fertility. Sedentary lifestyles also raise the risk of obesity, which is a major cause of infertility among other health issues.

According to him, “Couples should consider starting their families sooner rather than delaying parenthood. To maintain their fertility for the future, people should think about options like freezing eggs, sperm, or embryos if they plan to delay. Consult a fertility expert if you have been trying to conceive for more than a year, are a woman over 35, have irregular periods, or are aware of any reproductive issues. It’s essential to speak with a fertility specialist if you’re having repeated miscarriages, genetic conditions, or trouble conceiving. Early detection along with advice from a fertility specialist can improve the chances of conception.”
