Guwahati, Nov 20: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Guwahati on Saturday to a grand reception marked by cultural performances and large public participation, underscoring Assam’s vibrant social fabric. Soon after landing, the Prime Minister inaugurated the newly upgraded terminal building at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, a project aimed at positioning Guwahati as a major aviation hub for Southeast Asia.
The new terminal significantly enhances passenger handling capacity and modern infrastructure, reflecting the Centre’s push to strengthen air connectivity in the Northeast.
As part of the visit, Modi also unveiled a 28 foot tall statue of Bharat Ratna Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi, Assam’s first Chief Minister and a towering figure in India’s freedom movement. The statue has been sculpted by Anil Sutar, son of renowned Indian sculptor Ram Sutar, and stands as a tribute to Bordoloi’s role in safeguarding Assam’s political and cultural identity.
The Prime Minister was accorded a ceremonial welcome featuring traditional dance and music performances by artists from various communities, highlighting Assam’s cultural diversity.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed PM Modi on his arrival. The inauguration events were attended by Governor of Assam, Chief Minister Sarma, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, the Union Civil Aviation Minister, and other senior officials. Industrialist Gautam Adani was also present at the ceremonies.
