GUWAHATI, Feb 22: Commercial operations began on Sunday at the newly constructed integrated terminal of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma describing the development as a major milestone in Assam’s aviation infrastructure and growth journey.
The chief minister formally inaugurated operations, greeted the first batch of passengers and said the new terminal would significantly enhance passenger capacity and improve travel experience, strengthening Guwahati’s position as a key aviation gateway to the Northeast and Southeast Asia.

The terminal had been ceremonially inaugurated earlier by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and its operational rollout followed phased live trials covering check-in systems, baggage handling, security procedures and aircraft turnaround processes.
Sarma said the project reflects Assam’s broader development aspirations and has been executed with a focus on modern design, sustainability and passenger-friendly amenities, including advanced security systems, expanded check-in facilities, improved baggage handling and better parking and transport connectivity.
Highlighting future expansion plans, the chief minister announced that two five-star hotels will be constructed near the terminal to cater to growing domestic and international passenger traffic while creating employment opportunities for local youth.
He also revealed that the state government is exploring construction of another new terminal within the next two years to accommodate rapidly increasing air traffic.
In addition, Sarma outlined plans to develop an “aero hub” at Borjhar on the lines of major aviation hubs such as Delhi, aimed at strengthening connectivity, boosting trade and tourism, attracting investment and reducing dependency on metro cities outside the region.
Operated by Adani Airport Holdings Ltd, the airport currently handles over 130 aircraft movements daily and connects 21 domestic destinations and three international routes.
The expanded terminal raises passenger handling capacity to about 13 million annually.
Designed by architect Nuru Karim, the terminal draws inspiration from Assam’s kopou phool and incorporates extensive bamboo elements, blending regional identity with contemporary infrastructure.
Officials said the upgraded airport is expected to play a key role in supporting Assam’s economic growth, tourism expansion and connectivity across the Northeast.
