Security Guards Allegedly Assaulted Outside Guwahati Bar Over Speaking Hindi

GUWAHATI, AUGUST 7: Two security guards were reportedly assaulted by a group of intoxicated youths outside a popular bar on Guwahati’s Zoo Road late on the night of August 3. The incident, which occurred in the parking lot of Beer Cafe, allegedly stemmed from a confrontation over one of the guards speaking in Hindi.

Based on witness accounts and statements, a group of young women and men engaged in a shouting match with the security officers over something that seemed like a minor problem. The argument escalated into violence and, in broad daylight, people from the group physically assaulted the guards.

One of the security officers described what happened: the fight started around 9:40 p.m. while he was controlling traffic in the car park. “I was attempting to control the cars when a red Swift slightly pushed me from behind. I turned around and asked, ‘Mujhe gaadi se kyun maara?’,” he explained. “Because I used Hindi, they presumed that I wasn’t from here. They began asking where I was from.”. A girl in the vehicle shouted abuses, and soon the bunch came out and started beating me.

Even the girl joined in.

After the attack, the victims lodged a complaint at Dispur Police Station. Despite the availability of CCTV cameras and a video of the assault going viral on social media—evidently capturing the group beating and kicking the guards—there have been no arrests so far. The police state that attempts are being made to identify and track down the accused, though it has been seen that the culprits have removed their Instagram accounts, perhaps to avoid identification.

Sources mentioned that both victims hail from Karbi Anglong district and are employed as security guards in Guwahati and studying at the same time. The work sustains their families in the hometown. The two men have been left not only physically but also psychologically traumatized after the incident as they wait for justice. The case is still under investigation.
