MARGHERITA, Feb 16: Residents of Hamukjaan village in Ledo under the 83rd Margherita Legislative Assembly Constituency staged a protest on Monday demanding urgent road development and basic infrastructure, raising slogans of “No Road, No Vote.”

Villagers said they have been facing severe neglect for decades, with poor road conditions, lack of proper drainage and inadequate sanitation facilities continuing to affect daily life.

They alleged that the situation worsens during the monsoon, when waterlogging and muddy pathways make movement extremely difficult and disrupt access to schools, healthcare services and markets.

Local residents claimed that despite repeated appeals, no substantial development work has been carried out in the village.

They alleged that Margherita MLA Bhaskar Sharma, who has represented the constituency for two terms, has rarely visited the area to assess their problems.

Protesters took to the roadside carrying handmade placards reading “No Road No Vote” and “Build Road First, Ask Vote Later,” demanding immediate attention from elected representatives and officials.

Some residents also questioned local BJP functionaries, including the president of the Margherita BJP Town Mandal, over the continued lack of development in the village.

Villagers warned that if their long-standing demands are not addressed within a reasonable timeframe, they may express their dissatisfaction through their voting choices in the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.

Residents said the protest reflects a broader demand across rural areas for improved infrastructure, accountable governance and timely implementation of development commitments.
