Morigaon , Feb 09: An awareness programme on Handloom Mark, Geographical Indication and the Handloom Reservation Act 1985 was held on February 9 2026 at Pobitora Haat in Morigaon. The programme was organised by the Office of the Assistant Director of Handloom and Textiles Morigaon and sponsored by the Office of the Development Commissioner for Handlooms Government of India.
The programme was inaugurated by Additional Deputy Commissioner Morigaon Anushuya Sharma by lighting the ceremonial diya. In her address, she stressed the need for professionalism among weavers and urged them to apply for the Handloom Mark to authenticate and brand genuine handloom products. Describing Morigaon as one of the districts with a high concentration of skilled weavers, she encouraged diversification beyond traditional gamosa and mekhela chadar.
The District Project Manager of ASRLM spoke on various schemes and benefits available for the socio economic upliftment of weavers. EO Sujita Kalita also shared practical suggestions aimed at strengthening livelihoods and improving market access for the weaving community.
Resource persons Rita Devi Chief Textile Officer Directorate of Handloom and Textiles Guwahati and Chandan Bora Inspector Kamrup Metro delivered detailed presentations on Handloom Mark India Handloom Brand and the provisions of the Handloom Reservation Act 1985. They highlighted the need to protect authentic handloom products from imitation and misuse and encouraged weavers to leverage official certification for better branding and consumer trust.
The programme began with a welcome address and objective briefing by Praneeta Baruah Assistant Director Handloom and Textiles Morigaon who underlined the importance of such awareness initiatives in safeguarding the interests of weavers and promoting genuine handloom products.
Around 200 participants including weavers entrepreneurs departmental staff and other stakeholders took part in the programme. Handloom Mark registration certificates were ceremonially distributed to a few weavers. The event opened with Jatiya Sangeet and concluded with the National Anthem.
